How to model a mixed ducted + ductless system

With a mixed application, you still only need a single Manual J. Here's how to do it.

Written by Eric Fitz

A growing number of systems leverage both a ducted air handler and one or more ductless indoor heads.

The most common example:

  • Two-story home

  • A ducted air handler in the attic serving the second story

  • Ductless heads serving the first story

Amply can easily handle this scenario for a single project and a single manual J.

The short story: Set HVAC System Type to Ducted, and only model the duct system that actually exists. Since ductless portion of the home does not have ducts, you just need to make sure that the attic duct system is only serving the second story. Learn more about how to model ducts.

The supported workflow

  1. In the Building Profile, set HVAC System Type to Ducted. (See the callout below for why "Ducted" is the right choice even though part of the home is ductless.)

  2. Add only the duct system that actually exists. In the typical scenario above, that's the attic duct system serving the second story.

    1. Use the duct system's Stories Covered setting to indicate that this duct system serves the second story only. This prevents duct losses and gains from being incorrectly allocated to the ductless portion of the home.

Why "Ducted" when part of the home is ductless? The HVAC System Type setting really answers the question:

  • "Do you have any ducts on this project at all, or is it 100% ductless?"

If you have any ducted portion, choose Ducted so Amply applies duct losses and gains to the rooms that actually have ducts.
