Room orientation and window direction

Learn how to view the room orientation and edit window direction

Written by Matt Lowes

Amply sets the room orientation and direction of windows automatically using the built-in iPad compass. You can view room orientation courtesy of a compass rose in the top right hand corner of the 3D model view.

The direction windows and glass doors face is a very sensitive input in Manual J load calculations. For example, a south-facing window has almost six times the amount of solar gain as a north-facing window. Learn more about modifying assumptions for windows here.

Note: You can tap on the compass rose to orient the view of the 3D model to North.

Change the compass orientation of rooms / edit window direction

If you want to change the orientation of rooms, follow these steps:

  1. Open the 3D model of the room.

  2. Select a window.

  3. On the side panel, scroll down and select to Room Orientation.

  4. This will open a view with the model in a compass rose. Drag the room to rotate.

  5. The orientation you set when you navigate away from the room will be the new room orientation and will automatically change the direction used for any windows or glass doors in that room.

Want to edit room rotation in a 3D floor plan?

Note: It is important to clarify that the capability to change the room orientation is specifically used for modifying the direction windows are facing in a given room. It does not affect the floor plan representation of the rooms and how they're rotated relative to each other.
